Working with hazardous substances
Who the course is for:
This awareness course is suitable for everyone in the workplace who works with, or comes into contact with hazardous substances. It is primarily aimed at the employee but managers and supervisors will also find it useful to help manage the risks.
On completion of the course learners will know how to:
- Identify hazardous substances and assess the risks from exposure
- Prevent or reduce the risk of harm from using or being exposed to hazardous substances
- Apply a hierarchical approach to controlling risks from storing, using and disposing of hazardous substances
- Select and use the most appropriate personal protection for the task.
Duration – 20 – 30 minutes
Contents – The course is divided into three interactive modules:
Module 1 – What are hazardous substances? Learners will explore what is meant by a hazardous substance and will discover how they can get into the body and how they can cause harm. Learners will see a range of practical examples of typical workplace activities where hazardous substances are used or generated.
Module 2 – Where are they found? This module will focus on COSHH risk assessment and the risk factors that should be considered. Learners will also be introduced to Material Safety Data sheets as a key source of information when assessing risk.
Module 3 – How can I protect myself? In this module learners will consider how risks from hazardous substances can be controlled and managed. They will consider a range of strategies including the use of personal protection. Within this module learners will test their knowledge by taking a virtual tour of a factory and considering the various risks and controls as they go.
Assessment: Completion of the training programme will unlock a ten question multiple-choice test which when taken and passed will allow you to print off a certificate as proof of completion.
